LEICESTERS CRICKETERS TRIUMPH AT LOUGHBOROUGH!!!!

The University of Leicesters Indoor Cricket team pulled off an amazing smash and grab win in the BUSA Regional tournament at Loughborough. Under the guidance of joint coaches Matt Burleigh and Merv Roy, Leicester have now made it to LORDS to play in the national finals. This is the first time in 8 years that the team have achieved this, and are relishing the chance to go all the way.

A very arrogant Derby outfit were easily swept aside in Leicesters opening match. Derby were shot out for just 60, with "Ceefax" Clark taking 3 wickets, and Leicester putting in a faultless fielding performance. In reply, despite the hapless Simon Jenner receiving vicious abuse from the galleries, for his "Del-Monte-style" black trainers, he made an unbeaten 25. He was well supported by Rob "The Boxer" Wood (P1 L1 1k/o), with 20; Leicester winning inside 7 overs at 61-1.

In the second game, Leicester contrived to lose against Nottingham, who had lost their opening match to Derby. Batting first, Leicester were hampered by some Ëœmaverick" umpiring decisions, which accounted for Jenner for a duck, and "International Schoolboy" Geoff Price, who was still reeling from having his backside fondled by Umpire Hopley. Clark rescued the situation with 40, and debutant keeper Matt Stait continued his impressive start with an unbeaten 21. In reply, Nottinghams last man very luckily won the game, despite a vibrant appeal for lbw being turned down from the bowling of Chris "Thorpedo" Cain. The batsmen rode his luck, and Nottingham squeezed home in the very last over.

Then ensued a bowl-out between the three sides, which saw skipper Price lead from the front, as the only player to hit in the 1st round for Leicester, which saw Derby eliminated. In the sudden-death shoot-out that followed, it was "Golden-Arm" Clark who sealed Leicesters path to the final. The other highlight was the inclusion of super-sub Pop Monkey, who emerged from the balcony to participate in the bowl-out, alas to no avail.

The final saw Leicester face Sheffield Hallam Polyversity, who were unbeaten after thrashing Sheffield and the United Arab Emirates (sorry, thats the University of East Anglia ed.). Hallam won the toss and elected to bat. They reached a daunting 147 in their 12 overs, despite some fiery bowling from "Redneck" Cain and "Slugger" Wood. Leicesters reply began positively, with Jenner dancing down the track. Like Fred Astaire, to punish Hallams over-rated left arm paceman. However, following Jenners dismissal, Rob Wood proved his batting is no better than his fighting, as he went for 0, leaving his team in a precarious position. Price soon reached 25, which saw Clark and Cain take up the charge. When these two reached 25, Leicester were in sight of victory. However, upon his return, Price fell quickly, and Clark played a woeful shot, leaving Leicester requiring 16 to win from the final over, with Cain and the irritating "Brummie" Matt Stait at the wicket.

Leicester threw caution to the wind, and played some kamikaze cricket, which left 9 needed from 3 balls. The large contingent of Hallam fans were panicking, as their heroes arses caved in (Roy quote). It all came down to the final delivery, with 3 still needed. Cain smashed the ball to the back wall for 4, and victory was Leicesters prompting unbelievable scenes of jubilation. Leicester were still celebrating when Umpire Hopley came to offer his congratulations to the players, in particular Price, who he was rather impressed with. Leicester now travel to Lords, the home of cricket (after Stoughton Road) to contest the national finals on St Patricks Day next year.

The squad at Loughborough was: Geoff Price (Capt.), Matt Stait (w/k), Simon Jenner, James Clark, Rob Wood, Chris Cain and Pop Monkey.

University of Leicester Cricket Club Indoor Season Review 2000-2001

With the indoor league season now over, I thought it time to pass judgement on what has been a highly successful year, where the university finished 3rd in the Leicestershire Indoor League Premier Division, their highest ever finish. This will be like a school report in its review of players performances throughout the season.

Geoff (International Schoolboy) Price: The skipper of the side and jack-of-all-trades. Pricey batted, bowled and kept wicket at various stages of the season. His main discipline, batting, saw glimpses of the ability he has, although he sometimes flattered to deceive. He scored impressively against Loughborough Town on both occasions, and tactically masterminded the victory in the BUSA tournament. 7/10

Matthew (Stella) Burleigh: If you're wondering why they call him Stella, it is because, like the drink, he is "Reassuringly expensive". The veteran of the side, who knows all the umpires by first name, has had another vintage season indoor. As he is ineligible for BUSA, his appearances have been less frequent, but his bowling has been a boon for the Uni, whilst scoring some important runs when he's not batting with Simon Jenner, who has an uncanny knack of running him out! 8/10

Mervyn (Karate Kid) Roy: The calm and collected wicketkeeper-batsmen made an impressive start to the season, until injury prevented him from playing towards the end. His superb running between the wickets exuded confidence throughout the whole side. He too is ineligible for BUSA, but is part of the selection panel. 7/10

Simon (Hapless) Jenner: Despite a tendency to sometimes run his partners out, and the odd occasion where he loses his wicket cheaply, Jenner scored heavily in a number of matches this season. Highlights included fine innings against LCOB and Greenfields. One of the most amusing incidents, which happened time and again whilst fielding, was the sight of Jenner sprawled on the floor with the ball rebounding off the wall to hit him on the head! Priceless. 7/10

Rob (Fossil) Smith: "Fossil" because he's even older than Burleigh! (Impossible to believe, I know). He had a superb season for the indoor team, and has established himself in the squad for Lords, despite missing the famous victory in the BUSA. Robs all-round abilities with both bat and ball were vital to the teams high finish in the league. He scored a magnificent 48 against County Champions Lutterworth, and impressed against Narborough and Loughborough making him my player of the season. 10/10

James (Adolf) Clark: Don't even bother to ask about the nickname! In regard to my own season, I felt I improved on the bowling front no end, restricting sides with my measly medium-pace (most people say its slower than that!). However, BUSA apart, my batting was a bit of a disaster. Hopefully my batting in the BUSA will nudge the selectors when picking their team for Lords, as I do better in a bigger sports hall! 6/10

Chris (Redneck) Cain: Cainy's raw pace once again had batsmen leaping all over the place, as he shrugged off the "Popey wannabe" tag. With his kamikaze batting, Cainy is an all-action indoor cricketer who entertains the crowd. His bowling was excellent, and pivotal to our success. Hopefully he can deliver at Lords. 8/10

Rob (Tragic) Wood: Woody made a promising start to his indoor season, but he was forced out towards the end by a number of excuses, notably a black-eye, sustained by "accident" at Mega one night! His left-arm bowling impressed, but he struggled batting, mainly because elegance is not rewarded indoor. His place at Lords is safe, due to his variation and undoubted ability. 7/10

Matthew (Pixie) Stait: Our very own "Squirrel" came into his own following a tremendous performance in the BUSA with both bat and gloves. The sprightly wicketkeeper looked at home instantly, but his performances in the indoor league never reached the standard he had set at Loughborough, but overall, a good start. 6/10

Matthew (Cheeky) Bristow: Having missed out in the earlier part of the season, Bristow grabbed his opportunity with both hands in the New Year, as he impressed with both the bat, and his excellent fielding. His spin bowling did take some stick, but his performances against LCOB and Narborough with the bat, were excellent. 7/10

Paul (Boyo) Sayce: Welshman Paul came into the side to make his debut against Lutterworth. After the initial nerves had disappeared, he went on to bowl well. He is definitely one for the future, who is likely to make an impact in the summer. 6/10

The University now look forward to Lords on March 17th, where they will be competing against: Durham, Lancaster, UWIC (Wales), Kent and Exeter.
Further details to follow in the Ripple. In the meantime, nets are on Sunday between 4pm and 6pm at Manor Road. ALL welcome.
